wickedchildMatthew's soul grants him the ability to commune with certain beings. To copy paste from his app:
Matthew can communicate, and influence the behavior of a number of creatures-anything which can fall into the category of Creatures of the Night (which includes nocturnal animals of a non-magical nature and mystical beings such as werewolves or Chupacabras), the dead (either the undead such as zombies or simply spirits such as ghosts) and Denizens of Evil (such as demons, beings of chaos/destruction etc or, in extreme cases, malevolently insane* beings). This ‘stacks’, so something which fits into two categories (vampires are both Creatures of the night and dead) or all three (an incredibly evil vampire) will be effected more than something that fits into one category. This ability effects each being differently, but the general rule is that the more intelligent the being is, the more complex the effect. For example, a typical ‘urgh argh brains’ style zombie will not view him as a food, and if it is has no master, will follow his orders. Beings of animal intelligence will see him as an ‘alpha male’ or similar, becoming subservient. But, to something possessing human intellect, he will stir up feelings of familiarity and friendship, subtly twisting perceptions to place him in a favourable light. If he practices using this power, he can actually completely dominate beings in the categories above without casting a single spell.
On the flip side, beings which are good and pure, beings of light, defenders of justice etc will see Matthew's mere existence as a sin punishable by death. Just being a good person normally won't do it-a normal human would ironically have to be a saint to want to kill the ten year old, but beings which are by their definition on the side of good and light like angels are going to be effected.
Normally he wears a ring that stops this power leaking out, but he'll be taking it off more and more now that he's not in a place where 90% of the world would kill him for it.
*((I decided to elaborate on the defining term malevolently insane. Using the dictionary terms:
Malevolent:
1. Having or exhibiting ill will; wishing harm to others; malicious.
2. Having an evil or harmful influence
Insane:
1.not sane; not of sound mind; mentally deranged.
2. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a person who is mentally deranged: insane actions; an insane asylum.
3. utterly senseless: an insane plan.
In short, a being that possesses a senseless desire to harm others beings/the world. This is one case where motivation is the key deciding factor-harming others for pleasure, a desire for genocide, burning things because fire is pretty, these sorts of things count. Compare-a soldier who fights and kills to protect his country would not be effected, but a soldier who fights and kills because he hates other countries would.))
